CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. (Nov. 7, 2009) – Five members of Thiel College’s 2009 Presidents’ Athletic Conference finalist team have been named to the league’s all-conference squad. Thiel’s five selections represent a league-high, with champion Thomas More close behind with four selections.
Receiving a first-team nod was junior setter Madison Chylik (Valley View, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights). Chylik, who recently received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Districthonors, racked up 957 sets over the season (8.32 per set), while firing 19 service aces. Defensively, Chylik compiled an impressive 377 digs.
Freshman Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio/Howland) and sophomore Megan Kay (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) represented the Tomcats on the second team. Barzak turned in a spectacular rookie campaign, notching 274 kills (2.28 per set) and hitting an outstanding .389 on the year. She also led Thiel in blocks with 113 (44 solo).
Kay came up with a solid 464 digs on the season and also contributed heavily to the offense, piping 292 kills and 27 service aces.
Receiving honorable mention recognition were freshman Alyssa Chine (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) and junior Libero Stephanie Shipley (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor).
Chine registered 253 kills over her first collegiate season, while also notching 362 digs and 23 blocks. Shipley served up 19 aces over the campaign, but her defensive prowess stood out even more so, as she averaged 4.09 digs per set (380 total).
Dwyer was also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District.
Thiel recently finished up a 23-11 (11-3 PAC) campaign, which was the program’s best since going 24-12 in 1986. The Tomcats’ 11 conference wins is a team record. Thiel’s season ended on Saturday, with a, 3-0, loss to Thomas More in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship match.
