Former Tomcat Mamajek to be enshrined in Minor Pro Football Hall

PITTSBURGH – (May 11, 2009) – Thiel College football legend and 2002 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Richard “Dick” Mamajek '58 has been elected for enshrinement into the Minor Pro Football Hall of Fame. Mamajek will be one of eight inductees into the Hall's 29th class.
Mamajek earned four varsity letters as a member of the Thiel football team and was a co-captain during the 1957 season. Prior to enrolling at Thiel in the fall of 1952, he worked for B&O Railroad for two years after graduating from Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh. He was recruited by Tomcat assistant coach Joe DiFebo, who had heard about Mamajek while he was playing for the Glen Hazel Ironmen, a semi-pro football team in his hometown of Hazelwood.
Mamajek earned two of his varsity letters in 1952 and 1953, playing center and guard on the offensive line and tackle on the defensive side of the ball.  He was drafted for the Korean War after the 1953 season, missing both the 1954 and 1955 football campaigns.
He returned to Thiel in 1956, earning an additional two letters while lining up at the center, offensive guard, tackle, end, defensive tackle, and linebacker positions.
Over his four-year career, Mamajek started all but two games, missing those in 1957 due to injury.
The 29th Minor Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on June 13 at the Sen. John Heinz History Center and Sports Museum in Pittsburgh.
