GREENVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 30, 2010) – The Thiel College wrestling team halted a three-match skid by sweeping the competition at the 2010 Mel Berry Duals held at Beeghly Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The home-standing Tomcats defeated Rochester Institute of Technology, 37-13; Mercyhurst North East, 28-20 and WVU Tech, 59-0.
Five Tomcats turned in perfect 3-0 performances, including sophomore
Patrick Morris (Graysville, Pa./West Greene) (Graysville, Pa./West Greene) who won his three matches by either pin fall or technical fall.
Morris won his first match of the day at 184lbs against RIT's Tyler Brent. His second and third matches were at 197lbs, but yielded the same result – Morris pinned Mercyhurst North East's Jeff Hawryliw in 6:18 and earned a, 18-3, technical fall against WVU Tech's James Kerns.
Freshman 125-pounder
Tommy Kozak (Belleville,MI/Belleville) (Belleville, Mich./Belleville) improved to 17-6 on the year by pinning RIT's Joe Beaumont in 1:02 and picking up two wins via forfeit. Sophomore 141-pounder
Corey Brown (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) earned a, 17-4, major decision over RIT's Griffin O'Connor and a, 10-5, decision over MNE's Jason Alexander before earning his third win via forfeit.
Sophomore
Alec Miller (Transfer, Pa./Grove City) (Transfer, Pa./Grove City) earned a, 5-3, decision over RIT's Jason Wake and pinned MNE's Brandon Ward in 50 seconds before landing a thrid win via forfeit. Miller wrestled his first and third matches at 165lbs, while his second match was a 174-pound bout.
Heavyweight Kraig Smith (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) also went 3-0, picking up two wins via forfeit and earning a crucial, 6-4, decision over Julio Trujillo in Thiel's, 28-20, win over MNE.
WVU Tech forfeit all but two weight classes as Thiel rolled to its most lopsided win of the season.
Thiel returns to action on Friday, Feb. 5 when it welcomes Washington & Jefferson for a 7 p.m. match.
