GREENVILLE, Pa. (Feb. 12, 2010) – Thiel College earned a second place finish at the 2010 Presidents' Athletic Conference Wrestling Championship Friday evening at Beeghly Gymnasium. The Waynesburg Yellow Jackets earned their first-ever team wrestling championship with 105.1 points. Thiel followed with 101 points and Washington & Jefferson turned in a third place finish with 66 points.
Despite the team silver, Thiel came away with four of the tournament's ten individual championships.
At 133lbs, Corey Brown (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) earned his second-consecutive PAC crown by edging Waynesburg's Nick Garber, 4-3.
Sophomore Matt Lowry (Smithfield, Pa./Albert Gallatin) (Smithfield, Pa./Albert/Gallatin) took 149lbs by a slightly wider margin, downing the Jackets' Garrett Johnson by a, 11-4, margin.
Also winning his second PAC title in as many years was senior Greg Hogan (Uniontown/Laurel Highlands) (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands). Hogan –who struck gold at 157lbs last season – brought his winning ways to the 165-pound weight class by downing Jared Roberts of Waynesburg, 7-3, in overtime.
Sophomore Alec Miller (Transfer, Pa./Grove City) (Transfer, Pa./Grove City) followed suit at 174lbs, by overtaking Yellow Jacket Cody Catalina by a 4-1 decision.
As many expected, there was no shortage of suspense in the deciding of the team championship.
It all came down to the final match at 285 with Waynesburg holding a half-point lead. Yellow Jacket senior Melvin Warrick then clinched the victory with a 6-2 decision. With the win, the Yellow Jackets snapped Thiel's10-year hold (2000-09) on the conference title and earned the first conference crown for Waynesburg in any sport in five years.
