VERO BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 28, 2010) – No. 21 Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology handed Thiel College a, 17-0, setback Sunday afternoon at Dodgertown's historic Holman Stadium. The loss drops the Tomcat baseball team to 0-2 on the season while Rose-Hulman improves to 1-0.
The young Tomcats held the Engineers in check for much of the afternoon with the exception of a 10-run outburst in the third inning.
Thiel starter
Cory Borland (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) faced 12 batters in the inning before giving way to
Brad Bates (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) who – after hitting the first batter he faced, struck out the next two batters to end the onslaught. The Tomcat defense committed three errors in the frame all within the first five Engineer at bats, resulting in eight unearned runs.
Andy Saksa (Jefferson, Ohio/Jefferson) tossed the final six innings of the game for Thiel, striking out seven.
Derek Eitel kept the Thiel offense off the scoreboard with a complete-game four-hitter. The Engineers' ace struck out 13 Tomcats, while walking only two.
Shortstop
Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) registered a team-high two hits – including Thiel's only extra-base hit of the contest.
Thiel faces St. John Fisher for the second time in three days on Monday at 2 p.m. at Dodgertown.
