VERO BEACH, Fla. (March 4, 2010) – Alvernia University downed the Thiel College baseball team, 18-3, Thursday afternoon at Dodgertown.
The Tomcat defense committed 10 errors in the loss, which dropped them to 3-3 on the season. Alvernia upped its record to 5-1.
The Thiel offense was shutout through the first seven innings of play before freshman centerfielder Ryan Bernat (Indiana, Pa., Homer-Center) singled, stole second and came home when a ball off the bat of shortstop Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio, Midpark) was misplayed by the Crusaders' shortstop.
First baseman Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa., Cathedral Prep.) and catcher Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa., Hollidaysburg) tacked on two more runs in the ninth.
Porter and leftfielder Nick Ferracano (New Kensington, Pa., Plum) notched RBIs in the frame.
Thiel starter Cory Borland (Uniontown, Pa., Laurel Highlands) was tagged with the loss.
The Tomcats get another crack at Alvernia Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Dodgertown.
