Dunford to take reins of Thiel tennis program

GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 12, 2010)Tim Dunford has been appointed to lead the Thiel College men's and women's tennis teams, Director of Athletics Jack Leipheimer announced on Monday afternoon.  Thiel will field an NCAA Division III tennis program beginning with the 2010-11 season for the first time since 2006.

“We are excited to welcome Tim Dunford as our head men's and women's tennis coach,” said Leipheimer.  “His collegiate experience, belief in the division III philosophy and his commitment to the student-athletes' development in the classroom, as well as on the tennis courts, makes him a solid fit to lead our tennis program.”

Dunford comes to Greenville after having served as the head tennis professional at Dominion Valley Country Club in Haymarket, Va. since February of 2009.  Concurrently, he also worked as an assistant tennis pro at Burke Racquet & Swim Club in Burke, Va.

Prior to his most recent stint as a pro, Dunford spent two years as an assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Mount Olive College, where the men's team rose as high as 30th in 2007-08 national rankings.

“I'm excited to be the new men's and women's tennis coach at Thiel College,” Dunford said.  “I look forward to leading the team in the right direction and building a successful program on and off the court.”

The 2005 graduate of Shenandoah University spent the 2008 campaign in the high school ranks serving as head girls' tennis coach at James Kennan High School, where he coaxed seven wins out of a team that had compiled an 0-24 record over the previous two years.

He also spent nearly two years (Feb. 2004-Dec. 2005) as the head boys' and girls' coach at James Wood High School in Winchester, Va. where both teams showed marked improvement over his brief tenure.

Dunford served in various capacities – including those of tennis director and professional – at several country clubs and tennis centers since 2003.  He is a United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) professional and  a member of the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
