GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 25, 2010) – Allegheny scored three runs in the top of the ninth to earn its first lead of the day and closer Frank Brank posted a 1-2-3 frame to defeat Thiel College, 6-5, in baseball action at Tomcat Part on Sunday afternoon.
The setback made waste of a stellar effort from Tomcat starting pitcher Cody Northcott, who struck out eight and walked two in 6 1/3 innings of work.
Thiel did most of its scoring on a pair of homers by Justin Scarpitti and Jake Thomas.
Scarpitti’s three-run bomb staked the ‘Cats to a 4-1 lead in the third inning, with Thomas’ solo shot coming an inning later.
Down, 5-1, in the seventh, the Allegheny offense got to work, scratching out two runs then adding the final three in the ninth.
Brad Bates took the loss for Thiel in relief.
The Gators’ Matt Stahl and Zach Nichols each had a team-high two hits.
Kyle Burns earned the win by tossing four shutout innings after replacing starter Justin Abbott.
Thiel (12-21) returns to action on Wednesday when they welcome Grove City for a 4 p.m. contest.
