PEPPER PIKE, OHIO – The Thiel College softball team dropped their final game of the regular season,7-6, to the Ursuline College Arrows on Wednesday.
The Tomcats were the first to strike in the contest, scoring four runs in the second inning, three of which were tallied after a home run by junior centerfielder, Laura Davin (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park). It wouldn't be long before the Arrows countered, however, as they exploded for six runs on five hits in the bottom of the same inning.
The Thiel women answered back in the top of the third with two runs scored, tying the game at six runs apiece. Over the next six innings, the Tomcat bats went quiet scoring zero runs on just five hits but, junior pitcher, Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg Area), delivered a dominant relief effort, going five shutout innings while allowing only four hits, keeping the game knotted at six.
The ninth inning proved to be the Tomcats final, however, as a single by Ursuline catcher, Britney Mascia, sent home the game winning run, sealing Thiel's fate.
Davin led the Tomcats offensively, going 2-for-5 with a home run, while driving in three runs and scoring a one of her own. Stephanie Smith (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) and Britain Callen (Andover, OH/Pymatuning Valley) both contributed a pair of hits with a run scored, while Jen Kumar (Oakmont, Pa./Riverview) drove in two runs.
The Tomcats return to action on Friday, May 7 when the head down to Bethany, West Virginia to face the Bison in the opening round of the PAC Championships. The game takes place at 11 a.m.
