La CROSSE, Wis. — Thiel's
Corey Brown (Greenville, Pa., Reynolds) has secured his third straight All-American honor, becoming the first Thiel wrestler to earn the status three times.
The Tomcat junior finished 2-3 at the national tournament for an eighth-place finish. It's his second straight eighth-place showing in addition to a sixth-place performance as a freshman.
He dropped a 6-3 decision to Chad Henle of St. John's (Minn.) in his final match of the weekend. Trailing 4-2 after two periods, Brown pit himself in position to win with an escape in the third period, but Henle locked up the victory with a takedown.
Brown secured All-American status after advancing in the consolation bracket with a 5-3 win over Matt Holmes of Loras on Friday night. He led 2-1 after the first period, recording a takedown and allowing an escape. He upped the lead to 3-1 with an escape in the second period and matched Holmes' two escapes with a takedown in the final period.
Brown was sent to the wrestlebacks after being pinned by third-seeded Seth Ecker of Ithaca in the quarterfinals. He advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-2 win over Tigue Snider of Cornell College in the opening round.
Brown has been ranked as high as second in the nation this year and was seeded sixth in the 133-pound bracket. He finished 26-5 on the season.
