CLARION, Pa. – The Tomcat men's basketball squad shocked DII Clarion University with a dramatic win at the buzzer on Monday night, winning the exhibition match 61-59.
After the Golden Eagles sank three free throws to tie the contest up at 59-59 with 17 seconds left, Coach
Tim Loomis called a full timeout to gather his troops for one final play. The Tomcats broke the huddle, and inbounded the ball to senior
Anthony Harvey (New Castle, Pa./New Castle). Harvey, who was trapped, took an off-balanced shot from a foot inside the three-point line that hit the rim, bounced up, and bounced back in the net to give the Tomcats the win as time expired.
Harvey led all scorers with a game-high 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting. He also snagged four rebounds, dished out four assists and grabbed four steals.
Sophomore
Kamran McCaskill (Carol City, Fla./Miami Beach), whose three pointer with 3:18 remaining gave the Tomcats their first lead of the second-half, finished second on the team with 13 points on five-of-seven shooting, including a perfect three-for-three from behind the arc. AJ Forbes led the team with eight rebounds and added seven points.
Thiel shot 41.0 percent (24-58) from the floor and converted 9-of-17 (53%) of their opportunities at the charity stripe. The Tomcats were tenacious on defense- forcing 18 Golden Eagle turnovers en route to 12 team-steals.
Thiel will officially open their 2012-2013 season on Friday, Nov. 16 at Westminster College's Buzz Ridl Classic in New Wilmington, Pa. The Tomcats will take on Muskingum University at 6 p.m.
