Tomcats Finish Fifth at Midwest Regionals, Brown Earns Fourth NCAA Birth

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Tomcats wrestled to a fifth-place team finish at Saturday's Division III Midwest Regional Championship, hosted by Case Western Reserve University. Highlighting the day for Thiel was Corey Brown (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds), who earned the second Regional championship of his career.

Thiel totaled 91.5 team points, behind Regional champion Olivet College (165.5), Wabash College (112.5), Waynesburg University (103), and Trine University (99.5). The Tomcats totaled eight place winners on the day.

Brown will return to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship for the fourth straight year after earning a hard-fought 9-8 decision over Kameron Olsen of Olivet College in the 133-pound championship finals. Brown opened the day with a win by fall (4:39) over Trine University's Taylor Hanthorne before securing a 10-5 decision over Waynesburg University's Jake Vitolo in the championship semifinals.

Brown, currently 35-1 on the season, went into the Midwest Regional Championship as the nation's second-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds in the February 21 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) individual rankings.

As he has done all season, Jacob Lowry (Smithfield, Pa./Albert Gallatin) showed that he belongs among the top wrestlers at the 174-pound weight class. After posting a win by fall (1:53) over Case Western Reserve's Brian Snyder, a 19-9 major decision over Ryan Monce of Manchester College, and a 13-3 major decision over Nicholas Manning of Mount St. Joseph College, Lowry fell to seventh-ranked Trevor Tyler of Olivet by a 9-6 decision in the championship finals. Lowry finishes his stellar freshman campaign with a 29-6 record.

After suffering an opening-round pin fall loss (6:48) to Manchester's Garth Simpson Shayduan Velez-Lara (Belcamp, Md./Aberdeen) bounced back to finish third at 125 pounds. In the consolation bracket Velez-Lara posted a 22-18 decision over Wabash's Tommy Poynter before earning a 2-0 win over Alma College's Collin Lesko in the consolation finals.Velez-Lara concludes his freshman campaign with a 21-20 record. 

Patrick Morris (Graysville, Pa./West Greene) notched a fourth-place finish at 197 pounds, falling to Waynesburg's Patrick Jennings 8-6 in the consolation finals. Morris went 2-2 on the day and finishes the season 27-9.

Will Ringer (Fredonia, Pa./Reynolds) notched a fifth-place finish at 285 pounds, earning a 2-1 decision against Alma's Mason Ley in the fifth-place match. Ringer finished the season 13-12.

Steven Ceremuga earned a fifth-place finish at 184 pounds, picking up a win in the fifth-place match due to a flagrant misconduct disqualification by Mount St. Joseph's Billy Malicote. Ceremuga wrapped up his freshman season with a 13-8 record.

Matt Lowry (Smithfield, Pa./Albert Gallatin) finished off an outstanding career by finishing sixth at 165 pounds. After falling to eventual Regional champion James Myers of Olivet 10-4 in the championship semifinals, Lowry dropped 3-2 decision to the College of Mount St. Joseph's Cory Disbennett in the consolation semifinals. Lowry concludes the season 16-9.

Sean Byham (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) claimed a sixth-place finish at 141 pounds, suffering a 7-3 setback against Wabash's Garrett Payne in the consolation semifinals. Byham finished 20-16 on the season.

The 2012 Division III Wrestling Championship will be held March 9-10 at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wis.
