Dan McMillen Honored By PGA With Bill Strausbaugh Award

GREENVILLE, Pa. – Thiel men's and women's golf coach Dan McMillen '86 received the prestigious Bill Strausbaugh Award from the PGA for leadership and service to the Tri-State Section of the PGA.

McMillen, who earned his “Class A” status with the PGA of America in April of 1996, is recognized for emulating the same leadership, education and mentoring principles of the late Bill Strausbaugh, for whom the award is named. McMillen has been the Assistant Golf Professional at Tam O'Shanter Golf Course in Hermitage, Pa. since 2011 and was the club and teaching professional at the Greens of Greenville (Greenville Country Club) for 19 years prior to the 2011 season.

McMillen has guided the Tomcats since 2008. Under his tutelage, three Thiel men's golfers have earned All-PAC distinction, as Bryan Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin)'s second-place finish in 2012 stands as the best Tomcat finish at the conference meet since Lucas Munson finished third in 2006. Smith has twice earned All-PAC recognition under the watchful eye of McMillen.

In 2012, Thiel men's team took third place at the PAC Championships behind Smith's runner-up finish. The Tomcats' third-place effort was its highest finish since placing third in 2006.

McMillen has also been the Head Golf Coach at Greenville High School for 15 seasons, compiling a record of 152-91. A number of his players have gone on to successful college and professional careers, most notably T.J. Cooper, Duke University (1995-98).

McMillen still competes annually in the Tri State Section, and holds the distinction of being the first and only PGA Professional to record two holes-in-one on the same hole in the same day. That occurred on March 12, 2007 at the King & Bear Golf Club in St. Augustine, Fla.
